Watch out for silverfishes
Watch out for silverfishes: how to recognise that your home is getting too moist (Focus online)
They are very small, narrow, and love moisture: hence do silverfishes mostly settle down in bathrooms. If you spot them, take it as a warning that mould may soon spread around your place.
Silverfishes love to be where it is warm and humid. Therefore, you mostly get to see them in bathrooms. They do not represent any threat to your health or safety, says Susanne Smolka from Pesticide Action Network (PAN) Germany in Hamburg. However, they are a sign that the affected area is getting too moist. This moisture may gradually turn into mould. Therefore, you should always react if you spot any silverfishes in your place.
Ventilation, cleaning, plug
“Ventilation is the Alpha and Omega,” recommends the graduate biologist. This should be done a few times a day, and last for about two to three minutes. It is also recommended not to hang out any laundry in the bathroom as this would contribute additional moisture. To get rid of silverfishes, you shall deprive them for their favourite food, Smolka says, which consists, for instance, of skin and flocci. Regular brushing is therefore a must. You may attract silverfishes by using a bowl of sugar water or mashed potatoes. They will get trapped in the shell and then you can easily get rid of these little insects.
To make sure that no other silverfishes will find their way to your bathroom, do make sure that all cracks and holes in the walls are fitted in, as well as seal the tub and sink with pegs since most of the times these little animals reach your apartment by exploiting water drains. Therefore, it is advisable to flush them regularly by using hot water.
